JEE Main Rank Calculator: Important Terms

Terms What do they imply
Percentile Score Percentile Score is a score derived from the comparative results of test-takers. The marks earned for each exam session are converted into a scale from 100 to 0 to get a percentile score.

Note: It must be noted that the percentage of marks earned and percentile are not the same thing.

Highest Raw Score and Percentile Score It implies that the highest raw scores received by candidates will be normalized to a 100 Percentile Score for the relevant sessions.
Lowest Raw Score and Percentile Score All of the lowest raw scores have a different percentile score. The total number of applicants who took the exam for each session will determine the percentile score in this case.
Normalization It refers to the process of comparison of scores of all the candidates who took exams at different times.

JEE Main Percentile to Rank: Step-by-step Guide

In order to convert JEE Main percentile into JEE Main Rank, students will need the following figures:

Typically, it is easy to find the data for the first two points, however, it can be quite hard to analyze the data for the other points. Here is how you can figure it out.

NTA Percentile Score P
Total Number of Candidates for Exam N
Percentage of candidates who scored equal to or lower than you P

Take, for example, if you earned an 80 percentile, that means 80% of candidates scored equal or lower than you.

Percentage of candidates who scored higher than you 100-P
Number of candidates who scored higher than you {(100-P)/100}*N

Let us pick up the JEE Main Result 2022 Session 2. As per the statistics shared by NTA, out of the 622034 registered candidates,  540242 actually took the exam. NTA announced that 24 candidates achieved a perfect score in the JEE Main and have been named as JEE Main toppers.

In order to calculate your JEE Main Rank, you have to assess the number of students who have achieved higher percentile scores than you. The formula for the same would be 100, your highest score minus your percentile score.

Since the percentile is calculated on a scale of 100 to 0 for students of each session, the formula multiplies the total number of candidates in the session, which is 540242/100 by the percentage of candidates who scored better than you to calculate your rank.

Therefore, the formula for JEE Rank calculator through percentile for the session 2 is as follows:

Note: It must be noted that this formula cannot be used by toppers for a 100 percentile score because that will be impossible to arrive at.

The calculated rank is most likely All India Rank (AIR) that you can expect to acquire in the JEE Main. However, the actual rank may be different due to considerable factors.
